I Want To Animate

Tue Jul 28, 2009, 12:32 PM
I've read Preston Blair's Cartoon Animation and the first volume of The Tezuka School of Animation cover to cover. I've studied Of Mice And Magic since I was a kid. I know all the nuances seen in American, Canadian, English, and Japanese animation. I think I want to animate. But right now, due to my limited finances, I don't have the tools aside from pencils and paper, but I have ideas circulating in my head. I know how to storyboard, sketch out ideas, and some of the basics, but right now, no real technical tools.

But I really want to animate. Aside from a few projects, particularly the woefully underrated Chowder and Flapjack, the awesome DC Universe animated films, that Madhouse-produced Iron Man series, and the upcoming (?) Sym-Bionic Titan and Generator Rex, there's not much interesting me animation-wise these days. Avatar is over, Cartoon Network barely airs cartoons, and I don't have Nicktoons nor Boomerang. I need cartoons in my life, but right now, I'm not getting them. So, the only thing I have to do is create my own cartoons.

I'll admit, it'll take time, patience, and tools, but hey, I think I can do it. In the meantime, I'll keep writing, drawing, and making comics.

I don't know how many times you've linked to it, but until now, I didn't know you had a Deviantart account, largely due to my own ignorance. Well, anyway, this one's mine.

Don't sweat it. I've had it for a touch over five years. Only recently did I decide to upload stuff on it. It's still a fun diversion from time to time. Shame my most downloaded are a pair of color jobs I did on a Cyborg 009 drawing Lauren Montgomery made.

Still fun though. Hopefully, I'll add more sketches around here . . . when I have more time.

Thank you. It was kind of fun, plus, I wanted to see if I could do something like this. Love trying something different and new.

Liking the new site, Jeff. I've barely seen frames on a .com site in years. I love them! Having a little trouble finding all the new stuff, but I'm guessing it's because it's coming up as I type.

I hope everything's going well with you and your family since last month. How is your grandfather doing? Things were looking good when I read your entry a while ago.

Looking out for whatever you have coming next. Take care!

Thanks. I don't like things to be too complicated on my end (spending eight of the last ten years on a 28K Modem, I felt like better sites were out of reach), and I felt frames were necessary for the direction I wanted to take the site in the forseeable future. Plus, people tend to use flash for no reason. Go figure. The side banners could be easily modified in minutes rather than having to recode anything, add sections, remove a few, and keep things current. It's still a little wonky, but that's just first day jitters (the old BXT section was online until about an hour or so ago).

Hopefully, I'll be able to post one particular section by the end of the year. In the meantime, I'm having fun with this new design.

My family and I are making it alright considering what happened last month, at least as much as we can be. My grandfather's actually doing pretty fine. He's still quiet, but he's alright. Still have to make sure he's comfortable.

Thanks for the love though. Hope all's well with you, and you take care. Enjoy the day!

Yeah, flash can be difficult to work with for the viewer, especially when the viewer (me) doesn't trust downloading stuff to view the page or his/her monitor resolution isn't big enough to view everything. And as you have mentioned often, not everyone has broadband (and some people have picky AOL).

I'm glad your grandpa's fine. It's touching reading how dedicated you are to him. Had a shock this week, but other than that the family's fine. Had a lot of fun and growth this month as well. I'm blessed :) .

You enjoy your days too, now. Don't get too bogged down with the crazy stuff in the business while you work your site. There are enough people pulling out their hair...

Hey Jeff,

I'm sorry about the passing of your Uncle. I read about it on your blog yesterday (I'll leave a post there as well.)

I think at times like this it may help to watch a funny movie or just something to get your mind off of things.

On a lighter note: Yup, I put together in Photoshop CS3. It has an animation feature that makes the layers into frames, and you can change the timing on each frame. I just put the photos of the drawings on seperate layers. It would probably be cheaper to get Stopmotion pro, which I think does the same thing but at a cheaper price.
